Electric Vehicle Conversion – DIY Electric Car Conversion From Your Home Garage

Is it a good idea to start an electric vehicle conversion project from your garage? Many automobile owners are having a tough time with high gasoline prices. Those that use muscle cars or Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) are having a hard time trying to cope with their high gas expenses.

In order to save money, many people are considering using a pure electric car. Unfortunately, without a strong demand, electric vehicles (EV) from the manufacturers are still very expensive. A normal sedan EV is selling at $40,000 and above! The high investment cost is turning many people away from using electric car.

As a cheaper alternative, many EV enthusiasts are starting their own electric vehicle conversion project from their home. The concept of EV conversion is quite simple. The idea is to remove the heart of the automobile which is the internal combustion engine and replace it with an electric motor.

Since the engine is gone, other supporting components such as radiator, fuel lines, exhaust pipes and gas tank have no purpose anymore hence can be removed as well. To power the electric motor, a DIY electric car would need 15 – 20 units of deep cycle batteries. Deep cycle batteries are usually used on marine boats and they are perfect for EV.

In order to move the DIY EV, the electric motor is to be connected to the existing transmission unit of the car. When the motor spins, the torque in transferred into the wheels via the gears in the transmission.
